Wrestlemania, WWE’s largest annual event, was last night. For millions of wrestling fans, it brings back great memories from their youth in addition to creating new ones. This event made me think about the Baltimore Orioles in terms of wrestling characters…
Who would be the Orioles World Heavyweight champion? The Tag Team champions? The People’s Champion? The Undertaker or Triple H of the Orioles? The Vince McMahon of the Orioles? There are so many interesting and fun questions to answer, so let’s dig in: the Baltimore Orioles Edition of the WWE.
Tag Team Champs
I began by asking myself who would be a great tag team tandem – great on the field and good friends off the field. It led me to the young stars of Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop, who have been teammates since Low A Delmarva and have also represented the Orioles in the Futures Game of 2011. They are promising young players that have plenty of potential, and can impact the Orioles for years to come. Manny and Jonathan are also good friends off the field, as you can see when any of one of the two players hits a home run, they celebrate with a unique dance. They will be in the organization for a long time, and they are what I consider to be a great tag team that would easily win the Orioles Tag Team Championships.
People’s Champ
Who would be the People’s Champion of the Orioles? After a tough debate, I decided to give the title to funny man and great reliever Tommy Hunter. Why Hunter? Hunter, since coming to the O’s in July 201 for Koji Uehara, has taken a solid role in the bullpen and is, for the most part, lights out when the Orioles are leading in the late innings. Hunter is a fan favorite, with his funny antics and his love for the fans. He shows that he would be an excellent choice for this Orioles’ People’s Champion.
The Most Feared
Who would be the Triple H or the Undertaker of the Orioles, that one guy that no team wants to face whether it would be pitching or hitting? That man would be none other than the man they call Chris “Crush” Davis. Davis, as mentioned, came over in the July 2011 trade with Hunter, and has provided great power in the Orioles lineup since his arrival. His powerful 2013 season with 53 homers and 138 RBIs is evidence enough for this feared man in the lineup, and although he struggled last season he brings even more promise for this upcoming 2015 season. Crush Davis is one of the most feared men in the Orioles lineup (I wouldn’t pitch to him).
Vince McMahon
Who is the Vince McMahon of the Orioles? If you guessed Buck Showalter, then you chose correctly. Buck Showalter since his arrival in August of 2010 has completely changed the culture and foundations of the organization, and has brought three consecutive winning seasons to Baltimore. Showalter is also a no nonsense manager that has earned the complete trust of each of his Orioles players and is a fan favorite in Baltimore. Showalter puts the best team out on the field, and always “loves his guys,” As Vince McMahon would say, Showalter “is best for business.”
Heavyweight Champion of the World
Finally, who is the Orioles’ World Heavyweight Champion, a man who is a leader and one of the best overall players in Baltimore? That man is none other than Adam Jones, the captain in center field. Jones, since his arrival in the 2008 trade for Erik Bedard, has been a game-changer for Baltimore with his great hitting and fielding abilities that make every fan love him. Jones’ jerseys and t-shirts are seen everywhere around the city and for good reason – he is a big key to why Baltimore is looking for their fourth consecutive winning season. Jones is also kind and generous to the fans in Baltimore, and is an all-round great person for the community.
Therefore, your Orioles World Heavyweight Champion is Adam “@SimplyAJ10” Jones.
Those are my choices for O’s WWE equivalents. Feel free to leave yours in the comments.
And, let’s hope our O’s can bring home the real Championship Belts this year – the World Series Trophy.
Play ball.
