Like it or Not, Adam Jones is Right

Let’s take a quick trip away from the Orioles’ play on the field to talk about something else that happens on the field – fans being idiots.

Yes, that’s right, idiots. Adam Jones says they’re idiots and I’m saying it too. Jones made headlines this week for some pretty blunt comments about this special breed of knucklehead that thinks it’s funny to run out onto a baseball field during a game.

These are comments that are being “reviewed” by Major League Baseball for some reason. I’m not sure if MLB is reviewing the comments to draft a new policy to allow players to perform choke holds on perpetrators or to kick them with their metal spikes as Jones suggests, but that’s about all the review should be for.

Everything Jones said is true. Fans that enter the field of play create about as dangerous a situation as possible for the players on the field. It’s a risk that none of them should need to endure. Like Jones, I’m not condoning violence, but seeing a fan get a clothesline from a world class athlete on the middle of the field would likely deter future incidents. When you buy a ticket to attend a baseball game, it gives you the right to that seat. It doesn’t mean you can act like a moron and run out on the field to draw attention to yourself, your cause or others. The field is the players’ domain, not yours.

I’m applauding Jones, just as players throughout the league are. He should get your applause for his comments as well. The budding superstar has become a mainstay in the Baltimore community and is representing the Orioles very well. He’s not out there getting arrested, doing drugs or driving recklessly. His comments might be controversial at times, but he’s blunt and honest about everything he says. It’s refreshing to hear a pro athlete come out and say what he thinks rather than give the common cliché answers to reporters’ questions.

The next time a fan gets the urge to have a few drinks at a ballgame and mosey on out to the field of play, I hope he or she gets that cleat or a body slam from someone.

The players are the ones paid the big bucks to entertain on the field, so it’s time to leave it to them.

  1. If anyone wants to know why Adam Jones is 100% correct in this matter, google “Monica Seles Stabbing”. Are the other major sports waiting for something like that to happen before they beef up their security big time?

  2. So why show the kid’s face? Why not blur it? He is looking for attention, to be able to say to his bud’s “hey, my picture is all over the news.” So then the media goes ahead and enables him by showing it. One deterrent would be to stop showing their facs – TV does it, why can’t print and digital meda?

  3. It wasnt until this happened that the Orioles actually made the playoffs…just saying….maybe if Adam Jones learned to not swing at pitches in the dirt he wouldnt be so salty. Fans running on the field are far more entertaining than him striking out.

  4. Adam’s comments may be a bit pointed and a little too strong for the Sports Center’s editors – and maybe MLB, but he’s right on. Who remembers the incident a couple of years ago when a drunken father and son came out of the field to assault a first base coach? (The exact details escape me right now). I do, and so do everyone player and coach in all levels of professional baseball.

I do agree with Tony, though. In addition to not showing the a-hole’s face live on TV during the incident, lease don’t show it here or in the NY Post, NT Daily News, and other outlets that pander to the outlandish.
