On Manny Machado‘s 24th birthday, let’s take a moment and appreciate what he’s done so far, and look forward to what he still may accomplish as an Oriole. Press play or read below for more.
Today is the 24th birthday of one Manuel Arturo Machado – happy birthday, Manny. I thought this was a good occasion to look back and celebrate all that Manny has accomplished thus far. To do this, I’ll be getting a hand from the great O’s Stats and Facts Twitter account, which you should be following @BirdlandStats.
Manny has the most hits of any Oriole before age 24, at 616. That’s 90 more than Eddie Murray racked up, and 91 more than Cal Ripken, Jr. As far as home runs by an Oriole before turning 24? Only Boog Powell crushed more, at 88 to Manny’s 87.
What about extra base hits before age 24? Manny holds the crown there, with 226. Next on the list is Ripken with 194, Murray with 177, and Powell at 159.
In addition, Machado has the most multi-hit games and most multi-extra-base-hit games among Orioles younger than 24.
The Orioles PR staff tells us that, among players 23 or younger in O’s history, Manny is first in doubles, hits, extra-base hits, runs, and total bases.
His 226 extra-base hits before age 24 are 29th in MLB history, and his 87 home runs 28th.
Oh, and his glove isn’t bad either, as evidenced by his two Gold Gloves, one Platinum Glove, and well…some dazzling play that he makes seemingly ever night.
Manny Machado has already created a laundry list of great memories for Orioles fans. Here’s to one of him holding up a World Series trophy – as an Oriole, of course – joining that list some day.
