O’s setting up a “Big Three” of their own?

With the selection of high school pitcher Hunter Harvey at 22nd overall in the 2013 Draft, could the Orioles possibly be lining up their rotation to read: Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman, Harvey, Wei-Yin Chen, and Chris Tillman? Front loading pitching is never a bad idea.

The senior from Bandys High School in Catawaba, N.C., who many scouts have compared to Gausman, is a tall, lean, righty who comes from a baseball bloodline. Hunter’s father, Bryan Harvey, was a former All Star reliever.

The 6’3” 175 pounder was 8-0 with a 0.38 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings this past season.

Harvey has no intention of attending college and is looking to start his professional career right now, Roch Kubatko from MASNSports reports. He admits in an interview with MLB Network, “I’ve never really been a big fan of college.”

The franchise wishes to continue their string of Orioles Magic with first round picks. Fans anticipate that Harvey will follow in the footsteps of recent first rounders, including catcher Matt Wieters, lefty specialist Brian Matusz, phenom third baseman Manny Machado and flamethrowers Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman.

Adding Harvey to the duo of Bundy and Gausman should remind fans of “The Big Three” that the Oakland Athletics assembled back in the early 2000s with Barry Zito, Mark Mulder, and Tim Hudson.

Here’s to hoping the young arms of the Orioles rotation can play “moneyball” a little better than “The Big Three” in Oakland, who never reached the World Series together.

  1. Lets not get ahead of ourselves here. I like the thought, but Adam Loewen, Mike Paradis, Zack Britton have been busts. Lets see how Harvey pans out and if Bundy can get his arm healthy. Better yet, maybe Gausman can pick up a W

  2. where is this Hobgood kid we drafted 3 years ago. I haven’t heard anything on him since we drafted him.

  3. Let’s see if we can get a Big One first given this organization’s track record with developing pitchers.
