You guys, the Orioles still haven’t lost. This is getting kinda ridiculous, in the best kind of way. Hey, you stay woke though, guy who has to keep reminding us that the O’s won’t go 162-0, and that it’s a long season, and yadda yadda yadda. Look, nobody is crowning them World Series or even A.L. East champs at this point. We’re just saying that if you can’t even just take a moment to enjoy this, the best start in team history, then maybe being a sports fan isn’t for you. That’s fine though; there are plenty of other things to do.
The rest of us are gonna soak in this moment. 7-0 baby.
Let’s see what everyone else is saying.
Adam Jones Rocked a David Ortiz 500 Homer Necklace…Until Sloppy Homered
The giveaway at Fenway Park last night was a necklace commemorating David Ortiz’s 500th home run. Yeah, gross. Adam Jones, out of the lineup again, was having some fun wearing it in the O’s dugout. Then Mike Wright served up a dinger to Sloppy in the first inning, so Jones ditched the bling. Click on over to Cut4 for the GIFs.
Seven-Game Streak Longest Since 2005, Rickard Sets O’s Rookie Record
Joey Rickard’s hits in seven straight games are the most by an O’s rookie to start a season (though not to start a career). Matt Taylor of Roar from 34 has some more notes and quotes. Did you know that last year was the first that J.J. Hardy didn’t have a two-homer game since he became an Oriole? Of course, he got back on that horse last night with not one, but two homers (watch them here). That kinda stuff is what makes Matt’s blog the shiz.
Here’s How the Undefeated Orioles are Defying Expectations
Baltimore fans always clamor for love from the national outlets for our teams, so here is some from CBS…kinda. Jonah Keri goes down the list of how the O’s have won every game so far, but of course he throws a bucket of cold water on everything at the end. Because, how in the world could he and all his fellow “experts” have been so very wrong? Surely, this is all just random variation and the Orioles will crash back to earth at any moment. He’s right on some level of course – they’re not gonna go 162-0 – but it’s amusing to see these guys scour through all the peripheral stats trying to come up with anything to point to that will justify their claims of “LUCKY!”
Dan Connolly of Baltimore Baseball is doing a fun segment this year called Know Your O’s. It’s a video series where Dan will interview players about all sorts of things. For instance, Britton talks about choosing “For Those About to Rock” as his intro music, where he likes to eat breakfast in Baltimore, fatherhood, and other miscellany. I look forward to more of these.
Why Chris Davis is Not a Rally Killer
I follow some Steelers fans (yeah, I know) on my personal Twitter account. A couple years ago, I noticed them bellyaching while watching Pirates games because one of their broadcasters called home runs rally killers. Hilarious. While that’s obviously ridiculous, strike outs ARE of course rally killers. So is a guy who hits a lot of home runs, but also strikes out a lot, a rally killer? Ryan Pollack of Camden Chat dives deep (warning: lots of crazy math and graphs and sabermetrics), but if you can keep your eyes from glazing over, you’ll be glad when you get to the conclusion at the end. Even if it doesn’t match what your gut tells you (as was the case with Ryan).
And in NFL news…
For those of you who are Ravens fans as well, we’ll be putting a link down here going forward. If you love Baltimore’s other team as well, we hope you’ll check it out. If you don’t, hey, no biggie. Just don’t bother scrolling past the “NFL” warning. Cool? Cool. So what’s up in purple and black land today?
