On Monday morning, the Orioles announced that longtime fan favorite Adam Jones was back with the club, in a new role as a “Special Advisor to the GM & Community Ambassador.”
EVP and GM Mike Elias had this to say:
Adam was a tremendous representative of the Orioles on and off the field while he was a player. We are excited to formally welcome him back to our team, and we look forward to utilizing his experience, expertise, and perspective to help the franchise achieve sustained excellence.
I am grateful for the Orioles relationships I have formed since my retirement, which had led us to this exciting partnership. Having the opportunity to be around the game that I love, while also learning the operations side of baseball from one of the best General Managers is truly an honor. I am happy to be a resource for the Orioles organization and will offer everything I’ve learned from past experience to help the team succeed.
Baltimore has always meant to much to me, and this unique role will allow me to continue giving back to the community I love.
This is a special opportunity and I’m eager to embrace it fully.
Jones and the O’s had a rough patch for several years following 2018, his final year with the club. During the great sell-off of that summer which sent off longtime Birds such as Manny Machado, Kevin Gausman, Darren O’Day, & others, Jones refused to waive his 10 & 5 rights, & didn’t allow a trade. Of course, he was well within his rights to do so. Following that, things seemed frosty between he and the Orioles, and the new regime under Mike Elias had no ties to him, and thus no real reason to mend fences.
However, they started to do just that in recent years, as Jones was the first guest Mr. Splash in 2023.
Now fully back on board as a paid employee, it’s great to see the fences truly mended between the organization and “The Cap10.”
