You know who’s leading the Orioles in batting average right now? Matthew Richard Wieters.
Wieters played in just 26 games before being placed on the disabled list with an elbow strain on May 11. He’s slashing .308/.339/.500 and despite playing in four less games than Chris Davis, he has two more home runs. He’s got four more RBI than Nick Markakis in 16 less games and 9 more than J.J. Hardy in 8 less.
He was absolutely crushing the ball.
By comparison, Wieters average is 73 points higher than his .235 mark 2013 and 51 points higher than his career .257 batting average.
On Sunday, Buck Showalter told reporters that Wieters received a platelet rich plasma injection in his elbow and won’t come off the disabled list when he’s eligible on May 26. Wieters told reporters that the injection could speed up his healing. However, PRP injections are often precursors to Tommy John surgery. Just ask Dylan Bundy.
