Jim Johnson made things interesting last night in the 3-2 win over the Angels.
After retiring the first two batters, and quickly getting ahead of Josh Hamilton 0-2, it looked like it was going to be another easy save for the Orioles’ closer. Instead, Hamilton ripped a hanging curveball into the right field corner for a double. Albert Pujols then scooted a seeing-eye single through the middle of the infield to score Hamilton, and the Birds’ lead was down to one.
Stepping to the plate was Angels slugger Mark Trumbo, famous for his moonshot home runs, or “TrumBombs.”
O’s fans started to get a knot in our stomachs.
JJ was having none of it. He came right at Trumbo, inducing three straight foul balls and jumping ahead 0-2 again.
Then this happened (thanks to @GDixon410 for the GIF):
No word on whether or not the Baltimore grounds crew had to push Trumbo off the field with a broom as they tended to it after the game. I think he might still be standing there, wondering what just happened.
Let’s compare that to last month, when JJ did THIS to him:
Today’s meeting between the two clubs is the last scheduled O’s/Angels contest of 2013, so if there’s going to be a Part III of “JJ Makes Trumbo Look Silly” it will have to be now. Though I think that Trumbo would be perfectly OK not seeing Jim Johnson again for a year or so.
One Response
That was a great pitch. Perfectly located, down in the zone and Wieters never really had to move his glove. He will get that call 9 out of 10 everytime. Trumbo needs to foul that pitch off somehow. I know easier said than done, but it just needs to be done to keep the at bat alive. Good for JJ. The O’s needed that win to move up on both Boston and New York. Well done O’s.
