Checking In On the Latest Orioles Rumors

Chris Davis smirks while in extended Spring Training for the Baltimore Orioles.

Are we having fun yet?

While this winter hasn’t been nearly the debacle that last winter was, thanks to the lack of rumors about our GM flying the coop for bluer, more northerly pastures, it has still been very, very slow. Ever since the news of Darren O’Day’s return, there has been seemingly radio silence from the Warehouse, save for the signing of Hyun-Soo Kim (NA NA NANANA!).

Is Chris Davis even contemplating picking up a pen any time soon? Might Steve Pearce return to the Orioles? Does Wei-Yin Chen still exist?

So, as the seemingly interminable waiting continues – waiting for the offseason to end, waiting for pitchers and catchers to report, waiting for the Orioles to make a move, ANY MOVE! – we figured it was a good time to try to catch up on some of the latest rumors regarding the O’s and guys who played for the O’s last year.

The easiest way I can think of to do this is to look at the most recent Tweets about the player from anything resembling a reputable source.

Off we go…

Chris Davis

So, it sounds like the $150 million offer is still “on the table,” despite the fact that Alex Gordon just re-upped in Kansas City for a mere four years and $72 million. That comes out to about $3.5 million less per season, and three fewer seasons, than the O’s are offering Davis, who is just two years older than Davis.

Davis and Scott Boras should be running, not walking, to sign that deal if it’s still there. Realistically, Davis SHOULD be looking at a contract more along the lines of five years and $100 million. Not accepting 7/150 right now is a pretty bad look, if you ask me. No other teams are rumored to be offering him ANYTHING. If there’s any good news, it seems like the O’s aren’t bidding against themselves, though Boras is likely hoping they do by holding out. Don’t be surprised if other teams are “linked” to Davis in the coming days, as Super Agent tries to create a market out of thin air.

Just sign the deal, Chris.

If he doesn’t, it sounds like the Birds are throwing around names like Justin Upton and Yoenis Cespedes as potential fallback options. Though, of course, you could make the case that Davis should be the fallback for Upton, not the other way around. Will the O’s end up with any of these three players on the roster in 2016?

Let the waiting continue…

Wei-Yin Chen

The lack of activity surrounding Chen has been one of the biggest surprises of the offseason, in my eyes. I expected Chen to fall off the board quickly, and most likely to a West Coast team like San Francisco, Seattle, or Los Angeles. Instead, there were crickets for two months, and only now are we hearing a rumor here and there, and the usual suspects aren’t even involved. Washington? Kansas City?

Roch says that Boras (ugh) is seeking a 5-year/$100M deal for Chen. I don’t want to see the O’s pay that (and we all know they won’t pay that for a pitcher), but I’m surprised no other squads have bitten yet. If his price comes down significantly, perhaps he could wind up back in Baltimore, but I expect somebody to give him $90 million here shortly.

Steve Pearce

Steve Pearce is seemingly garnering very little interest as he seeks a two-year contract. That’s not all that surprising, if you consider the way he crashed back to earth in 2015 after looking like he, maybe, had finally figured things out in 2014.

I can’t see the O’s giving Pearce two years, but some team probably will, so he’s most likely leaving the nest. Birdland will miss you and your necklaces, Steve.

Well, that’s the roundup of non-news for now. Yes, I know there are other free agents out there – you know, guys who DIDN’T wear the orange and black last year, guys who would actual help the team, like, IMPROVE, in 2016, as opposed to just maintaining the status quo.

Maybe we’ll hear about some of those guys in the coming days/weeks. Maybe what we hear won’t just be “[Player] signs with San Francisco Giants!” (Seriously guys, give it a rest. The Giants are like a more-successful version of the New York Yankees these days.)

Maybe. But probably not.

Here’s to something happening soon. Until then, we’ll be waiting right along with the rest of you.
