The Orioles announced on Wednesday afternoon that they have recalled Ryan Flaherty from Norfolk after his second DL stint for a groin pull. To make room, they designated Alejandro De Aza for assignment.
De Aza, 31, provided a nice little spark for the Birds when he was acquired late last season from the Chicago White Sox. He hit .293/.341/.537 in 20 games and 89 plate appearances, adding three homers, five doubles, three triples, and knocking in 10.
However, in 2015 he has looked absolutely lost, going 22-for-103 while striking out 34 times. He has three homers, four doubles, and one triple for a putrid .214/.277/.359 line. I’ve taken to calling him Alejandro “K Aza.” Despite having decent speed, both his defense and his baserunning have left much to be desired at times.
De Aza went through arbitration this past offseason, losing to the O’s and signing for 1-year $5 million.
