Well, this is embarrassing.
It’s bad enough that Orioles opponents have hit a great deal more home runs onto Eutaw Street than members of the home team have (O’s 28, opponents 40). Now the O’s have a bit of egg on their face after Matt Slovin of USA Today Sports pointed out that they spelled Matt Wieters’ name wrong on the plaque commemorating a home run he hit last season.
On June 29, 2012, Orioles catcher Matt Wieters belted a three-run home run that landed on Eutaw Street, just in front of the warehouse that is one of Camden Yards’ defining features.
To commemorate the feat, accomplished 68 times in the ballpark’s 21-year history, the team places plaques along the street with the player’s name, team, the date and the distance the home run traveled.
But Wieters’ shiny, new plaque includes a typo — his name is spelled “Matt Weiters.”
When he was shown a picture of the mistake Sunday, an incredulous Wieters said “No way,” and rushed to inform Jay Moskowitz, Baltimore’s coordinator of baseball information. Moskowitz promptly e-mailed a member of the team’s ballpark operations staff.
“I can’t believe that,” Wieters said.
No other names enshrined on Eutaw Street appear to be incorrect, with even the unique “Asdrubal Cabrera” impeccably spelled.
The O’s will surely work quickly to get this fixed. I have to remind myself to think twice about how I’m spelling Wieters all the time, especially when we have two “EI/IE” guys on the team, and the spellings are different (Wieters vs. Reimold). At least it wasn’t a uniform misspelling (h/t to message board poster Seabird):
San Francicso
Cncinnati
Angees (my favorite)

Wow, that is pretty embarrassing. I can understand an opposing player, but your own guys? I agree, somone’s head will be rolling over this I am sure. Feel sorry for that poor guy. Can’t believe someone didn’t double check that before actually putting it down. A lot of people failed on this one.
Unbelievable!!
my fave uni misspelling was a few yeara ago when the Washington Natinals took the field!
Unless a ball travels 400′ or more, there should be no plaque.
No Natinals reference?
One year at the Annapolis graduation their diplomas said they graduated from the US Navel Academy.
