The Orioles lit up Royals starter Yordano Ventura early on in Tuesday night’s game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning (that could have been 6-0 if not for an amazing HR-saving catch by Lorenzo Cain). Ryan Flaherty added a home run to make it 5-0 in the second inning.
That was just the beginning of the fireworks, however.
During Manny Machado‘s second AB, in the second inning, he took exception to a couple of inside fastballs from Ventura. Manny swatted what he thought was a homer, but the wind blew it back, and he had some words with the pitcher.
In the fifth, Ventura plunked Manny. Then, this happened:

Ventura has been at the center of some brawls before, and of course Machado is still dealing with the reputation he earned when he tossed a bat a few years back.
This is certainly unfortunate and stupid, as Machado will absolutely have a five-game suspension or so coming his way shortly. At the same time, the guy just threw a few 95+ MPH fastballs at him, so I can’t completely blame him for reacting the way he did.
And, it looks like he got a good punch or two in, so there’s that.
When play resumed, Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis hit back-to-back home runs, and the O’s now lead 8-1 in the fifth.
