Per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Orioles have traded reliever Tommy Hunter to the Chicago Cubs for minor league outfielder Junior Lake.
Hunter had grown into a solid reliever for the Birds after failing as a starter in 2012. He posted ERAs of 2.81 and 2.97 out of the ‘pen in 2013 and 2014, respectively, but his numbers ballooned a bit this year, to 3.63. He has also allowed 11/28 inherited runners to score this year, a 39% clip (14% and 16% last two years).
The Birds get Junior Lake, a 25-year-old from the Dominican Republic. In parts of three seasons with the Cubs, his career slash line is .241/.283/.380, with 16 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 22 attempts. He is hitting .314/.404/.472 for AAA Iowa this season.
How does this move help the O’s in 2015? By giving them some bullpen flexibility. That’s about it. Now they have guys out there (Mychal Givens, Mike Wright, etc.) who can be optioned.
So long, Tommy Hunter. We’ll always have Clinchmas, and this amazing photo:
