As Kevin Gausman prepares to make his third start of 2013 tonight, in the opener of an absolutely critical four-game series against the American League East leading Toronto Blue Jays, he is getting some praise from the team he dominated in his last outing.
Per Steve Melewski of MASN, Oakland’s Brandon Moss had some high praise for the 23-year-old:
“That guy, I got to home plate in my first at bat and I looked at (Nick) Hundley and I said, ‘How can that guy be in Triple-A?,'” Moss said. “From what I understand he’s had some command issues but the way he pitched, that was the best stuff we’ve seen all year.
“The first at-bat, you could tell he had (velocity), but you never know how that is going to go. We can adapt to that. Second and third at-bats he started mixing in offspeed for strikes and keeping it down. Then he had 99 in the tank when he needed it.”
It was certainly a pleasure to watch Gausman pitch on Saturday. The hope here is that he continues that dominance not just tonight, but going forward. The Birds will have to make a tough decision when Miguel Gonzalez gets back from the 15-day DL if the “Gas Man” puts his flag in a rotation spot, but that’s OK. I don’t want to see Gausman spending any more time in Norfolk.
