  • Henry David in the house!

Today there was so much action for the scheduled scrimmages vs Pittsburgh that I had trouble keeping up with it!

Highlights for today included seeing starter Jean Pinto, he’s warm! The righty struck out five of his 12 batters faced today and the lineup he saw featured some of the Pirates top prospects like Matt Frazier and Nick Gonzalez. Nick got Carlos Tavera for a long home run and added a bases loaded double so he was a tough out all day. O’s 3B prospect Coby Mayo had a long liner to deep CF that surprised the OF with its speed.

Interestingly, in one of the games the defensive alignment was Joey Ortiz at 2nd, Jordan Westburg at SS and Gunnar Henderson at 3B. I missed the chance to film a 6-4-3 double play and remarked to Director of Player Develoment Matt Blood that I should have been filming.

Outfield prospect Elio Prado looked good moving and used his speed to beat out a close play. I saw him get a bad jump and get thrown out by 2021 top draft pick Henry Davis. Then I saw him beat Davis with a much more well-timed jump later. Love to see some learning on display.

It looks like two starters poised to take that next step are lefty Drew Rom and righty Kyle Brnovich. The more I see them the more I believe that 2022 will be big years for them both. The results have been mostly very good but the maturity compared to past camps is glaringly obvious. I think they’ve both grown up to where the stuff and makeup align. Expect big things.

Another arm looking good is righty Dan Hammer. 2021 was up and down for Dan as he got back to full health. There have been some positive signs at camp however. None bigger to me than a strikeout looking of a frustrated Davis.

Seeing relief prospect Thomas Girard a couple of times, he’s made a favorable impression on me. His late movement is strong and the ball ends up far away from its perceived plane. I’d like that juice playing in the pen. I’ve seen righties and lefties have to reset in the box against him.

Other highlights include corner Jacob Teter being the first out of the complex in the am and OF prospect Zach Jarrett absolutely stinging two balls pullside, one to a leaping SS and one to a 3B who had the big guy played perfectly.
