Bullpen reinforcements are on the way ahead of Baltimore’s series finale in the Bronx.
The Orioles are signing veteran right-handed pitcher Lou Trivino to a major league deal, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal said on Monday.
Trivino, 34, was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate before opting out of his minor league contract to become a free agent over the weekend.
In 10 relief appearances for the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the veteran posted a 2.77 ERA, allowing four earned runs in 13 innings pitched. He also recorded 20 strikeouts to just four walks in that span.
Trivino joined Philadelphia on a minor league deal in August 2025, but also played for the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers during the season.
In 47 regular games for the three organizations, including two starts for the Dodgers, he logged a 3.97 ERA and 1.343 WHIP. The 34-year-old allowed 21 earned runs on 46 hits in 47 ⅔ innings thrown.
A former 11th-round pick by the Oakland Athletics, where he spent the first four and a half seasons of his big league career, Trivino holds a career 3.87 ERA in six years as a major leaguer.
Baltimore’s latest addition to the bullpen has prior experience with the team’s current opponent New York Yankees. Trivino spent 25 games with the team in 2022, posting a 1.66 ERA across 21 ⅔ innings before being released by the team in November of that year.
Injuries and minor league assignments kept Trivino out of the big leagues for two seasons before his three-team 2025 season.
Now, he aims to offer veteran reinforcement to an O’s bullpen that has experienced a great deal of change in the past week.
Baltimore’s relief unit has allowed 19 runs in their past six games (3.2 per game) including a seven-run outburst from veteran reliever Andrew Kittredge in Sunday’s 11-3 loss to New York. In three games against the Yankees alone, the bullpen has allowed 14 of the 27 opposing runs.
The unit also lost closer Ryan Helsley, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. Though, recent transactions have left many speculating about the true nature of Helsley’s injury.
The 31-year-old has begun treatment for the injury and will be re-evaluated for throwing later in the week, per MLB.com’s Jake Rill.
In a corresponding move, the team will option rookie right-hander Trey Gibson back to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides after he made his MLB debut on Sunday.
The Orioles will look to avoid an early four-game sweep at the hands of the Yankees on Monday. Shane Baz is set to face off against New York’s superstar right-hander Cam Schlittler with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
