Continuing our look into the Birds’ Incredibly Improbable Series of Unfortunate Events last night in New York

Following Adam Jones’ drop of a long Vernon Wells fly ball that allowed three runs to score in an inning where the Yankees didn’t manage a single hit, the Birds came to the plate in the top of the eighth and started to put something together.

Alexi Casilla (AKA CC Sabathia’s Kryptonite) singled.

Nick Markakis singled.

First and second, nobody out, tying run at the plate in the person of Manny Machado. Machado has been heating up lately – ever since his three-run home run in the top of the ninth in Boston on Wednesday night, he’s looked like a different hitter.

His AB since the home run:

  • Double (thrown out trying to stretch into a triple)
  • Ground out
  • Bunt single
  • Single
  • Walk
  • Strikeout
  • RBI single
  • Single

Including the home run, Machado was 6-8 with a walk over nine plate appearances. Those seven times on base nearly matched his season total to that point (6-for-39 with two walks prior).

Birdland felt good with Manny coming to the plate.

Then, things got ridiculous.

That’s right, Machado hit/ran into the always routine 4-6-5-6-5-3-4 triple play.

These two gaffes were a pretty perfect illustration of How not to win a baseball game by the Baltimore Orioles

And, Kudos to the Yankees (/throws up in mouth) for pulling it off and making the Birds pay.

The two teams go back at it today, with Jason Hammel taking on Phil Hughes. Hopefully, Hammel will lay down the hammer and the Birds will even the series at one.

More importantly, hopefully they don’t completely give this game away, like they did last night.
