Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – the O’s unraveled against the Royals. I know, shocker. The best thing you can say about that Kansas City series is that they managed to avoid getting swept, an outcome I think many of us feared and kind of expected. And, in typical Orioles fashion, the only game they won was against KC’s best pitcher, Johnny Cueto, who they touched up for three two-run bombs.

That’s so O’s.

To the links, and to a better weekend in Texas.

More on Jones’ Injury

There was a scary moment yesterday in KC, when Adam Jones ran into the wall trying to track down a Ben Zobrist double. Buck and Richie Bancells came out to check on Jones, who stayed down on the ground for a while. Though he stayed in the game initially, he was removed before his next at bat. After the game, Jones told reporters that he was feeling fine again, and expects to play tonight in Texas. Breathe a sigh of relief, then go check out his quotes on Roch Kubatko’s blog.

Manny Machado Holds Active MLB Consecutive Games Streak

At just 127 games, Manny Machado is now baseball’s active “Iron Man,” with the longest streak currently going, as Jake English of Bird’s Eye View points out. Can that possibly be right? Where have all the Iron Men gone, indeed. Anyway, Jake gets into how crazy it is that Manny, who has gone through two horrific knee injuries & subsequent surgeries, and who we all still fear will crumple into a heap at any moment, has bounced back the way he has. Here’s to Manny, Manny more consecutive games for Machado.

Microtrends: Kevin Gausman’s Weak Contact

After watching a clearly superior Kansas City team wipe the floor with our Birds (as opposed to last October, when they were just a clearly luckier team), O’s fans need some good news. Ryan Romano of Camden Depot tries to provide a bit, explaining that Kevin Gausman has actually gotten better results in most peripheral statistics this year than in years past, meaning that he might be turning the corner as a starter. He is getting weaker contact, especially on his fastball, which he has learned to locate higher in the zone. My hope is that Kevin spends this offseason – knowing that he’ll start 2016 in the rotation – refining whatever breaking pitch it is he hopes to keep, the curveball or the slider. (Did you see what a guy throwing 100 MPH heat WITH a good breaking pitch did in KC yesterday, Kev?)

Mychal Givens an August Bright Spot

The O’s started August nicely enough, going 10-7 and sliding into the second Wild Card spot. Since, of course, they’ve tanked, losing seven of eight to fall to 11-14 on the month. One bright spot during the dog days of summer, though, has been reliever Mychal Givens. Joshua Sadlock of Baseball Essential goes into the details of the 25-year-old’s dominance.

Section 336 Casual Friday – Back to School

Sometimes – especially after losing seven of eight and three of four to the damn Royals – you need some non-O’s talk for a change. Fortunately, the Section 336 guys are back with their new Casual Friday segment, which is especially topical for those of you with children who went back to school this week. WARNING – skip the first 20 seconds if you don’t want an awful song stuck in your head all day.
