The O’s capped off a very successful road trip by taking three out of four from the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. In a series characterized by pitching and defense, the Birds came up with just enough offense to win the series, even taking two of their games in extra innings.

Let’s take a look at the highlights…

Thursday

Nick Markakis made a great diving grab to end the first.

Then, Nick opened the scoring in the third inning, giving the Birds a 1-0 lead with an RBI single.

Delmon Young quickly followed suit, launching a three-run shot to give the O’s a 4-0 lead. That would prove to be the end of the scoring – for both teams – on the night.

In the fifth, starter Wei-Yin Chen made a great leaping grab to rob James Jones of a hit.

Speaking of Chen, he was very, very good, tossing eight scoreless frames.

Friday

Facing Felix Hernandez is no easy task, but Nelson Cruz started off the second inning with this laser shot home run to give the O’s a 1-0 lead.

“King” Felix has his “court” in left field for starts at Safeco, but one brave O’s fan crashed the party.

Former Oriole Endy Chavez tried to score from second on a two-out single in the fifth, but Steve Pearce was having NONE of it, throwing out Chavez by a mile to preserve the 1-0 lead.

The M’s would eventually knot the game at 1-1, however. Nine innings wasn’t enough, and the game went to extras, where Chris Davis came through in the 10th.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the 10th, as the O’s ended up winning on the exceeding rare “walk-off challenge.”

After the game, Davis was all smiles. Unfortunately, his clutch hit – again – failed to carry over into any sort of momentum for the big guy.

Saturday

The Birds had two chances to take the series after winning in games started by Iwakuma and King Felix on Thursday and Friday, but things didn’t get off to a good start on Saturday. Bud Norris struggled early, and the O’s late rally came up short.

Though Bud got out of a jam in the first unscathed, it was a sign of bad things to come.

Manny showed off his arm in the 4th inning with the Birds already down 3-0.

Down 4-0 in the 8th, the Birds got a gift when Kyle Seager couldn’t handle Davis’ grounder and two runs scored.

Now down 4-2, J.J. Hardy knocked in Davis with a single to pull the Birds within a single run.

Alas, that was all the O’s could muster, as they dropped game three by a score of 4-3.

Sunday

With a golden opportunity to not only win the series, but take home a winning record on the road trip, the O’s sent Miguel Gonzalez to the mound in the finale. Unfortunately, it WAS a Sunday, so nothing would come easy.

Gonzalez was up for the challenge, working around trouble to allow just a single run through 6.0 innings.

Jonathan Schoop tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single in the third.

Steve Pearce made a great diving play to rob Logan Morrison of a hit in the fourth.

Manny Machado hit an infield single to give the O’s a 2-1 lead in the 8th.

Unfortunately, Darren O’Day gave up a very rare home run as the M’s tied it in the bottom of the frame. So, off to extras we went again, where Machado would pick up his second go-ahead RBI of the day.

In the bottom of the 10th, Zach Britton was absolutely unhittable.

Series, good guys.
