I have been following the Section 336 guys (interviewed here) since I had the pleasure of interviewing them for Eutaw Street Report. In one of their recent episodes, I noticed that another Orioles podcast had started beef with them, even going so far as to record an entire parody podcast. That other podcast is none other than the Orioles Spastics, an Arrested Development-themed Orioles podcast. I was able to contact them and they were gracious enough to delve into the beef and further expand on what they are all about:

First, who are you and where do you live?

We’re all from Maryland, but we’ve split up. Dean’s in Frederick, Charlie is in central Pennsylvania and Chris just moved to Albany.

Describe your podcast in 100 words or less:

Orioles Spastics is one of the top 5 best Arrested Development-themed Orioles podcasts around. We aren’t that knowledgeable or funny, but we have a good time discussing the Birds and making Arrested Development references and it seems like our listeners like it enough.

Why an Orioles podcast?

We are all lifelong Orioles fans, and we’ve been messing around with the idea of a podcast for a while. Like most people, we love talking O’s with our friends. This podcast gives us an excuse to blow off our responsibilities once a week to talk about our team and pretend that it’s important that we do it. Also, Chris has no Orioles fans to talk to in New York.

Why an Arrested Development theme?

Well, when we thought of doing a show over the last few seasons, we were worried about getting bogged down mid-season by a tragic team and thought that maybe if we talked about some random things as well we could keep it fresh and fun. But we didn’t want to be too random and alienate the five or six listeners we might accrue, so we decided to pick one show to have as our theme. We chose the best show there is, and one that would make us look (falsely) witty.

I noticed you started beef with the folks at Section 336, why?

As children, we were often provoked to fight the other boys. Dean believed it would create a competitive spirit which will equip us for the challenges of podcasting. He also believed tapes of the dispute would be a big hit in the burgeoning Orioles podcast market. We hope to franchise the concept and release such titles as “Boyfights 2,” “A Boyfights Ballgame,” and “Airwave Boyfights: The Trip To Night At The Yard.”

Boyfights

Who do you think “won” the fight?

Well. Boyfights were a big hit in Latin America.

How many Oriole games do you plan on attending this year?

We started off the season pretty strong with a handful of trips to the yard early. However, as spread out as we now are, not as many as we like. Maybe one day we’ll get season tickets and grow old together. It’s pretty rare that any of us miss a whole game on either the radio or TV.

Favorite Oriole (past or present)?

Dean is a Mike Bordick fan, or at least was before someone gave him a mic. Charlie is partial to Jesse Orosco, and Chris can’t ever pick between Luis Hernandez and Brandon Fahey. Actually, sometimes it’s Chris Gomez.

How many Orioles wins do you predict for THIS season?

We made predictions at the beginning of the season and I believe only one of us had the O’s into the playoffs. If we all had the chance to reconsider, we’d say the O’s are very strong for a wild card spot and just maybe the division title. 95 wins.
