Jeff Passan of Yahoo! has reported that MLB is going to have a “Players’ Weekend” later this season, during which players will be allowed to wear things like jerseys with nicknames on them, crazy colored cleats, and more.

Players will have the option to wear a jersey with a nickname – though they are limited to just one, according to the memo, and “inappropriate or offensive” nicknames will be banned.

The items with minimal color restrictions include spikes, batting gloves, wristbands, compression sleeves and catcher’s masks. The colors, according to the memo, must avoid interfering with the game and an umpire’s ability to make a call. White gloves, wristbands and sleeves are prohibited.

Each jersey will feature a patch with space for a player to personalize it by “writing the name of an individual or organization that was instrumental to his development,” according to the memo.

Players’ Weekend is scheduled for August 25-27.

We’ve seen some of this in the past, as notably Adam Jones and Manny Machado have both worn some pretty loud footwear. This has the potential to be a pretty cool event, or it could be quite lame, with players choosing to put their Twitter handles on the backs of their jerseys or other such lameness.

As Pete Kerzel of MASN notes, we could end up remembering it as we do the goofy “Turn Ahead the Clock” jerseys from that ill-advised promotion back in 1999. Remember these?

Eeeeeeeyuck.

Pete also reminded me that O’s fans actually have a fond memory of that weekend – a 3 HR game by Albert Belle featuring a walk-off by Cal Ripken, Jr.:

So this got us thinking: what should some Orioles choose to put on the backs of their jerseys that weekend? Our ideas here…

First up, the endearing “nicknames:”

Adam Jones’ choice needs no explanation. The man is the #Cap10.

Schoop = Dope.

While putting these together, I learned something: the folks at MLB shop are well aware of nicknames that fans have given to players, and you’re not allowed to customize jerseys to reflect these well-known nicknames. When I tried to use “BEEF” and number 29 on an O’s jersey, I got an error. Likewise with “Dope” and 6 above. Both of the previous two jerseys, therefore, required some MS paint editing. Strange.

Lately, not even BunDays are fun, however.

Trey Dongz >>> Boom Boom Mancini.

Back in black. Zach will be back by August, right? RIGHT?!?!

Seth Smith is affectionately known as “Dad,” from his time in Seattle, in case you weren’t aware. Fittingly, his back hurts at the moment.

And now, a few where we’re just being mean…

Not sure if you’ve noticed this, but Chris Davis strikes out looking a lot.

Is he the player he used to be?

I also tried “Arrieta 2.0,” but MLBShop was having none of that.

And finally, our miscellaneous category:

Cuz there weren’t enough letters available for “Kid’s Gotta Eat.”

Guess where the Orioles play August 25-27? That’s right, Boston. They’ll again be taking aim at Manny for some new perceived slight, I’m sure.
