The Birds had their five-game winning streak snapped by the Colorado Rockies last night, as Chris Tillman finally turned in the clunker that we all feared he was due for. Meanwhile, the Birds’ bats, despite the five-game winning streak, still aren’t clicking like we know they can. Hopefully they find them tonight and carry them straight through the weekend in Toronto. The Blue Jays, in case you hadn’t noticed, took over second place in the AL East from Boston last night.

To the links.

Schoop Providing Sweet Middle Infield Power for O’s

Kevin Ruprecht of Beyond the Box Score uses a bunch of words to point out a fact that Birdland is well aware of: Schoop = Dope.

More on Jimenez-Upton Talks, Harvey Surgery, Kim

According to Roch Kubatko’s source, though the Padres are eating a large chunk of Melvin Upton Jr.’s remaining contract following their trade with the Blue Jays, they didn’t offer the O’s similar compensation. Interesting. That, Buck talking about Hunter Harvey’s surgery, Hyun Soo Kim’s plate discipline, and more over at MASN.

Why Losing Out on Melvin Upton Jr. is No Big Loss

Speaking of the failed Upton deal, Dan Connolly of Baltimore Baseball reassures us that it’s no big deal. In general I agree with him, though I’m still not convinced that acquiring any starting pitching help is anything more than a pipe dream. What would make me forget all about Upton? Bringing back Steve Pearce.

Will the Orioles be Underrated Again Next Spring?

The grass turning green, the birds chirping, and national pundits predicting the Orioles to finish in the AL East basement – all signs of spring. Will it happen again next year, even after everybody seemed to be wrong about the O’s yet again? Probably, says BSL’s Chris Stoner. You know what would help the O’s gain a bit of respect – both toward their MLB club and toward their farm system? Participating more in the international market, the lack of which Stoner says he believes isn’t Dan Duquette’s decision.

The Orioles’ History of Walk-Off Errors

Monday night, the Birds won on a walk-off error. After the game, I jokingly jabbed at Matt Taylor of Roar from 34, saying that I couldn’t wait to read his post on the history of O’s walk-off errors. Never one to shy away from a challenge involving O’s history, Matt stepped up and compiled the complete list. That was the 20th time the Birds have won a game on a walk-off error. Click on over to read about all the others.

And in Ravens news…

Ravens Sign Former First-Overall Pick Jake Long

On the eve of training camp (the full squad reports TODAY), the Ravens added some much-needed OL depth in the form of 2008 first-overall draft pick Jake Long. Long has bounced around a bit and been injured in recent years, but most of the RSR staff really likes the potential of the signing to have a positive impact. Knee-Jerk reactions at the link.

  1. Upton WAS a big deal. He sends Trumbo to DH and suddenly we have a defensive right fielder. Plus the speed. Blame Angelos. It’s things like this that keep the O’s from bettering themselves.
