Wednesday’s O’s Links: Fight the Pink Hat Nation Invasion, Birdland!

First, it looked like the O’s might get no-hit. Then, it appeared as if the Orioles Magic that was on full display Sunday was rearing its beautiful head once more. Then, those hopes were immediately dashed by the guy who has become public enemy number one in Baltimore, a fella whose name rhymes with “Dookie Debts.”

Suddenly the Sux are tied with the O’s, each just a game back of Toronto. Annoying. Let’s get this win tonight, huh?

To today’s links.

OPACY: Still Gorgeous, Still a Red Sox Haven, Still Nearly Half Empty

Baltimore Baseball’s Dan Connolly takes O’s fans to task, and for good reason. For the last few years, the tide of “Pink Hat Nation” (Red Sox fans from nowhere near Boston) flowing into our stadium had been stemmed. O’s attendance was good, and Boston’s baseball team was bad. This year, those chumps are good again, and attendance at The Yard is down overall. Combine those two factors, and you get the disgusting scene we saw last night, where our stadium is nearly half folks cheering for the bad guys. Connolly calls it “pathetic,” and while I love you, Birdland, I have a hard time disagreeing. Get to the Yard!

Zach Britton Could Have a Real Cy Young Case

August Fagerstrom of FanGraphs dives into Zach Britton’s case for the AL Cy Young award, which was all the talk on Twitter yesterday. Of course, noted O’s hater and human apple pie Keith Law (or “Keith Legal,” as Buck calls him) was getting Birdland riled up by poo-pooing Britton’s case. Fagerstrom seems much more objective, so you should read his article.

Bird’s Eye View Episode 176: Freak Out

Are you freaking out? Jake of Bird’s Eye View did so on Sunday afternoon before the Birds’ comeback. He and Scott lay out the five levels of “BirdCon” for O’s fans in this week’s show. After last night’s loss and the news in the next link, I’m starting to fire up BirdCon 2 myself…

Tillman Scratched from Wednesday’s Start with Sore Shoulder

Chris Tillman had been scheduled to start Wednesday’s game, which was pretty perfect – it seems like just about every time the O’s have had a “must-win”-ish game this year, Tillman has been the one to take the ball and get it done, stopping losing streaks whenever he needed to. While the team isn’t currently on a losing streak, the really can’t get swept – even in a two-game set – at home by Boston. Unfortunately, as Roch Kubatko reports, Tilly has been pushed back to Saturday with some shoulder discomfort. Gulp.

Adam Jones Drew a Clutch Walk – There’s Not Much History There

Back when it still looked like the O’s had a shot last night, Adam Jones came up with the bases loaded and his team down by one. Jones, amazingly, has only one grand slam in his career. As O’s fans know, he’s none too patient in these situations, pitchers know that, and he doesn’t get anything to drive. However, to everyone’s astonishment (not least of all the Red Sox pitcher, I’m sure), Jones was incredibly patient and drew himself a five-pitch walk to tie the game. If you saw that coming, you need to go try your luck at one of those best online slot machine, because you’re on a roll. Matt Taylor of Roar from 34 tells us just how rare Jones walking is, and looks at some other O’s who were averse to the free pass at times in their careers.
