Monday’s O’s Links: How Sweep It Is

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Birds had a great weekend, sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays in four games in three days, while extending their lead over Boston in the A.L. East to four games. It was a great way to finish up the home stand, as things are about to get tough – the team heads to the West Coast for two games in San Diego, three in Seattle, and three in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. West Coast trips are no joke – just ask the Washington Nationals, who lost five in a row in San Diego & LA recently. Here’s to the Birds avoiding a similar fate.

Let’s see what’s up in the blog O’sphere.

Orioles Rotation is Fine

Camden Depot’s Jon Shepherd says that, despite all the panic about the O’s rotation, it’s actually fine by most metrics. Of course, he notes, if they could add an above-average starter (like, sigh, Zach Davies), they’d go from a good team to a dominant one.

Reviewing Gausman

Paul Sporer of Baltimore Sports and Life takes an in-depth look at Kevin Gausman’s peripherals over the last several seasons to try to figure out why we aren’t seeing more of the Gausman who shut down the Rays for 7.2 on Saturday. Basically, Gausman gets hammered by right-handed batters because of poor command in the zone. Sporer says that the next two teams Kevin will face, the Mariners and Dodgers, have a lot of lefties in their lineups though, so perhaps Gas Man can get on a roll.

Orioles Send Message to AL East with Sweep of Rays

ESPN’s Eddie Matz notes that this series against Tampa was the first the O’s have played in two months with Manny Machado and J.J. Hardy on the field for every game. Hm…didn’t realize that. While the sweep was sweet, I’m not sure that extending Tampa’s losing streak from six to ten really send all that much of a message. Too much baseball still to play.

These are the Good Times

As Andy from The Office once said, it would be nice to know when it’s “the good old days” before you’ve left them. Bird’s Eye View’s Jake English says that O’s fans are in the good old days RIGHT NOW, so we should really sit back and appreciate it. He lists some reasons that everything is awesome, including Chris Tillman, Jonathan Schoop, Adam Jones, and more. Bottle it up!

Wieters Producing, Creating More Questions for O’s Future

Matt Wieters has been pretty damn good this year (doing everything except calling games for Kevin Gausman, that is). While that’s obviously great for this year’s team, it only makes things more complicated for the front office moving forward, as they have to add him to the already very long list of players who they’d like to sign up to keep around for a while. Our own Andrew Stetka, in his weekly guest column at MASN, explores the Wieters dilemma a bit.

And in Ravens news…

A Flacco State of Mind

Joe Flacco was on the podium at OTAs recently, and gave us some insight into how frustrating it was for him to suffer a major injury after never missing a snap to that point in his career. Brian Bower of RSR has the quotes, and says that Joe seems to have a very clear mindset as training camp approaches.
