Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is exceeding even the most optimistic expectations so far in 2013. While we all knew he would continue to man the hot corner at a Gold Glove-caliber level, not many thought he would figure out MLB pitching so quickly.

After four-hit game on Wednesday, which followed a streak of three straight three-hit games and a 1-4, Manny has hit safely in 11/13 games in May, and has a ridiculous .421 batting average for the month.

Moreover, here’s his slash line for May: .421/.450/.684. He’s hit three home runs and six doubles this month.

He currently leads the majors in hits with 59, is second in doubles with 17, is second in total bases with 93, is 11th in the AL in slugging (.541), and is 10th in the AL in OPS (.920).

For you sabremetrics guys, he is first in the AL in WAR at 2.6.

On Wednesday, he became the youngest player since Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente in 1955 to hit three doubles in a single game.

Of course, all of the usual “small sample size” disclaimers apply. Pitchers will continue to try to adjust to Manny, and he’ll have to, in turn, do the same.

Still, it’s at the point where, even when the O’s lose (like they did the past two days), there’s a bright side: at least we, as Birds fans, get to watch Manny Machado play day-in and day-out.

I think @OsUncensored put it best on Twitter yesterday afternoon:

Don’t take it for granted, because this kid is quickly becoming something special.
