The Baltimore Orioles dealt AAA pitcher Zach Davies to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Gerardo Parra. Our staff reacts below…

This is another of Dan Duquette’s deadline deals, following in the footsteps of Bud Norris & Andrew Miller. Like Miller, Parra is at the end of his contract, so this is likely a rental. That won’t make much of the fan base happy, but we also have to remember that this team has a very poor track record of developing arm talent into solid MLB pitchers. With that in mind, the price of Davies isn’t all that bad. It’s doubtful Parra can continue his scorching July, but if he continues his career year, he’ll definitely be a nice addition to a lineup that lacks some punch at the moment, especially in the corner outfield spots. I like it. If the rumors of a three-team deal involving Philly & the Cubs (and sending Tommy Hunter for Ben Revere) pan out, I’ll consider this a pretty successful trade deadline.

(Edit: So yeah, that didn’t happen. Revere is going to Toronto.)

The Section 336 guys give their thoughts, in audio form, here:

It fills a need and doesn’t give up much. We get a corner outfielder that we needed, plus we get a lead off hitter. Only one player has a higher average in May, June, July than Parra. If Orioles can re-sign him in the off-season, this could turn out to be a great deal.

Adding Parra fills the void of an outfielder with good plate performance. We have given many guys in the organization a chance to fill this hole and no one has stepped up. I wonder what outfielder is now out, and I hope Manny can adjust to the 3-hole because Parra needs to be our lead off bat. Zach Davies could have had a shot at next year’s rotation but is not a top end guy and the O’s typically do a good job of filling lower slots with guys like T.J. McFarland, Steve Johnson, or Tyler Wilson.

The addition of Gerardo Parra fills a big hole in the Orioles’ lineup that not only gives them a speedy leadoff hitter with stolen base potential and a high OBP, but a far above-average glove as well. Parra should fit in nicely in left field, allowing the O’s to minimize platooning in the outfield. Parra’s addition potentially means the O’s will subtract Chris Parmelee from the team and, if Parmelee is the odd man out, move Chris Davis back to first base full time. Parra’s presence at the top of the lineup will also allow Manny Machado to hit in the middle of the order where he can produce more runs. As for Zach Davies, with the Orioles’ track record of developing pitchers and the fact that we have yet to see him pitch in the big leagues, I do not think he is a huge loss. For a team that clearly wants to win this year, Parra for Davies is a great trade, though you never really know who “wins” a trade until a few years down the road. Looking at you, Seattle.

I like the Parra-Davies trade, but only as a secondary move. DD & Co. need to make a bigger splash in the OF trade market in order to justify trading off a young SP with team control for a rental. If the O’s are going for a pennant before the impending FA debacle of ’16 then they need to go all in. Toronto has pushed all its chips into the center of the pot, and the Birds need to call their bluff. Yoenis Cespedes maybe? Make Yo an O! (As long as it doesn’t involve Kevin Gausman)

Tyler Lombardi

The Orioles make a move that helps them in the present. I wouldn’t have minded had they stayed put, but they make a move to get better. It remains to be seen how effective this move will be. Parra is hitting way better than he has throughout his career this year. If he regresses back to his career average, this move won’t look that good. But if he keeps it up, he could be the player who gives us the push to at least make a run for the Wild Card spot. Considering what they had to give up, the move was well worth it.

Career 99 OPS+ hitter (in a walk year) having a career year (140 OPS+) being traded for a potential #3/#4 starter? All on a club that is essentially a .500 team? I don’t like it on paper. But the Orioles have done terribly at developing pitchers and having them be successful at the major league level. So there’s that. But I think this is another mark against Duquette, who has too often traded young talent for very short period rentals (Miller, Parra) or marginal upgrades (Snider). This doesn’t move the needle to me. Especially with Parra in a walk year.

Andrew Stetka

I really like the deal, especially because they didn’t give up a whole lot to get him. People can bark about Zach Davies being the organization’s 3rd ranked prospect, but that isn’t saying much with this farm system. Parra gives the O’s a leadoff hitter. Even though it feels like a replacement for mistakes of Alejandro De Aza and Travis Snider, it’ll be a nice addition for the rest of the season.

We’ll post more as they come in…
