Well friends, we got through the first month of the season. The last series of the month against the Yankees was pretty ugly, but we still ended the month in first place. Well, tied for first place with the Yankees, but we don’t need to mention that tiny little detail.

This season at ESR, I’ll be handing out a monthly best-hitter award, which we’ll call “The Wood O’ the Month.” Let’s get to our inaugural winner(s)…

Runner Up: Welington Castillo

Looking back on April, there were a couple of players I felt had a great first month. First up, our man behind the plate, Welington Castillo. Prior to the season, fans seemed to be split 50/50 on Matt Wieters not being re-signed. I’ve always been an Orange Jesus supporter and as much as it pained me to see the Orioles let him walk, I knew it was for the better.

Castillo hit .264/.322/.423 in 2016 with the Arizona Diamondbacks & was signed with the Orioles to share duties behind the plate with Caleb Joseph. We got to see a little of what Beef could bring to the table as we watched him in the World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic. For April, Castillo went 22-for-77 with six doubles & a home run & hit .314/.333/.343. Most recently against the Yankees, he went 4-for-10 with his first home run & three RBI. With those numbers, it seems as if he is adjusting to the American League just fine.

Not to mention, the excellent tag at home plate to hold off getting swept by the Yankees.

Adam Jones follows through on his swing.

Wood O’ the Month: Adam Jones

And next, our Cap10, Mr. Adam Jones who is currently hitting .309/.369/.479 with four home runs, four doubles, 11 RBI and wait for it…eight walks. That line puts him in the top five among MLB center fielders through April. A memorable moment for AJ and the fans was when he notched his 1,500th career hit on April 26th against Tampa Bay.

Only 623 players have 1,500 hits under their belt.

Adam started the season with a seven-game hit streak and for the month, he hit safely in every game except for three.

It’s now a new month of baseball & a four-game series at Boston is up next.

Will Castillo & Jones continue to bring it? Or will they pass the baton to the next Oriole who’s sure to heat up? I’m thinking we’ll have a new winner next month, but only time will tell.

I can’t wait to find out…impress me, boys. Let’s see that wood.
