Stop me if you’ve heard this before, Nolan Reimold is heading to the disabled list. I know, I know, I shouldn’t joke about the poor guy’s health. I do feel bad for him, but I also have to wonder if his time in an Orioles uniform has come to an end.

MASNSports.com’s Roch Kubatko reports that Reimold’s DL stint will be backdated to March 26.

Manager Buck Showalter stressed that Reimold didn’t experience a setback. He can bat without restrictions, but still has difficulty tilting his head to track fly balls.

Showalter said Reimold, who will take off a couple of days, is “light years ahead” of where he’s been physically.

“We’re trying to get him all the way healthy,” Showalter said. “Nolan agrees this is the right thing to do.”

Placing Reimold on the DL increases the chances that Steve Pearce andDelmon Young make the 25-man roster unless there’s a trade.

That last part is quite possibly the most important. With Reimold on the shelf, I’m projecting that the Orioles bench will look like this:

  • Catcher: Steve Clevenger (L)
  • 1B/OF: Steve Pearce (R)
  • 2B: Jemile Weeks (S)
  • OF: Delmon Young (R)

That means that Steve Lombardozzi will start at second base, Ryan Flaherty will start at third and David Lough will be in left field.

When Reimold returns, who does he replace? It won’t be Pearce, who is out of options. He can’t play in the infield, so I assume that Weeks is safe — even if he wasn’t the O’s have Alexi Casilla in Triple-A. That leaves Young. Is Reimold really an upgrade over him?

  1. I like young’s bat this spring and he always hits lefties. It’s time to cut the cord on Reimold and move on.
