Let’s get right to it…

O’s Face Old Pal Gonzalez on Friday

Tonight in Chicago, it’ll be Yovani Gallardo, who the O’s gave $22 million AND lost a draft pick for, against former Oriole Miguel Gonzalez, who the team DFA’d in spring rather than pay him about $3.5 million this year. Miggy was awesome in July. Yovani was awesome…for a few innings here and there? Sigh. Dan Connolly of Baltimore Baseball has some thoughts on the Birds’ misjudging of their rotation.

Wade Miley’s O’s Debut a Mixed Bag

Speaking of misjudging the rotation options, Dan Duquette’s latest link in his effort to chain together a decent five is Wade Miley. Wade was just OK last night, though he probably deserved a little better than his final line indicated. ESPN’s Eddie Matz has quotes from the southpaw and the skipper.

The Five Best Buys of the Trade Deadline

FanGraphs’ Dave Cameron lists his best win-now moves of the trade deadline, and the O’s acquisition of Steve Pearce comes in at number five. Cameron gives this caveat, though:

To maximize the value from this trade, and their chances of reaching October, they should just put him in the lineup everyday, and celebrate landing a quality hitter at almost no cost.

With Pedro Alvarez hitting the cover off the ball, and Mark Trumbo showing signs of breaking out, it’s tough to find a spot for Pearce everyday. Perhaps he needs to be taking some AB from Chris Davis at first base?

The Orioles are Still Andy MacPhail’s Team

An interesting perspective from Camden Depot’s Jon Shepherd. 50% of this year’s team fWAR comes from players originally brought in under the old regime.

Time to Retire the Teixeira Storyline

Have you heard? Mark Teixiera is retiring. Do you care? Believe it or not, I’ve seen several posts around social media today from O’s fans who are still bitter at the Severna Park native for choosing the Yankees all those years ago. Holding grudges like that isn’t healthy, y’all.

And in Ravens news…

Correa’s Intensity is Much-Needed

You may have heard that Ravens rookie LB Kamalei Correa has been playing like a man possessed in training camp, perhaps hitting a bit harder than he should be in practice at times. He drilled Mike Wallace, got in a scuffle with Dennis Pitta, and Joe Flacco was reportedly in his face at one point. RSR’s Ryan Jones says he seems like just the sort of player that the defense, which has missed that old swagger in recent years, needs.
