Greetings once again, Birdland. I know it’s been a while since we chatted here. Hopefully everyone’s NFL/NBA/NHL/NCAA or whatever teams are treating them well as we count down the days until the sweet sounds of the bat cracking the ball grace our ears again. MLB hammered out a new CBA recently, so let’s get into that and more as we kick off the first weekend in December and await the winter meetings.

How the Orioles are Affected, or Not, by the new CBA

Camden Chat’s Mark Brown has a nice rundown of the ways the new agreement may affect the O’s. The biggest news for us in Birdland is probably the draft pick compensation no longer being tied to free agents. The O’s have both benefited from (Nelson Cruz), and been victimized by (Yovani Gallardo, Ubaldo Jimenez) this clause in the past, so we’ll have to see how things even out.

Buck Talks About CBA, Free Agents, & More

There are a million terrible things about winter. Somewhere on the list is the fact that we don’t get to hear Buck Showalter talk to us every day about how things are going to be just fine. Unfortunately, I still can’t help you there, but I can at least point you to this article from Jon Meoli where you can read some quotes from the Skipper. Everybody ready for some more “late fishing?”

O’s to Lay Groundwork on Deals at Meetings

Britt Ghiroli has a primer for the winter meetings, which start on Monday. Again, if you go into this thinking that the O’s will do anything of consequence, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment. Of particular note for Birds fans: the Rule 5 draft is December 8.

Will Waiting on Free Agents Work for the O’s This Year?

Jon Bernhardt has some more words to prepare you for the Orioles’ long, boring winter. The guy many orange & black faithful had their eye on, Josh Reddick, signed with Houston on November 23. There’s not much out there to get excited about.

Starting Pitching Was Not (Really) a Strength of the 2016 Orioles

This article, from Joe Reisel of Camden Depot, is a week old, but still worth your time. Especially considering the fact that the starting rotation that begins 2017 in Baltimore will look, at the least, extremely similar to the one that ended 2016, if not identical. How bad/good exactly were those O’s starters last season?
