The bats finally woke up yesterday, but unfortunately the A’s bats did the same late in the game and we were forced to sweat out a game that we once led 7-0. So that was a little annoying, but all’s well that ends well, and the brutal set in Oakland ended well. The Birds had a “getaway day” on a day where they weren’t even switching hotels, as they now head across the (other) Bay Bridge for a three-game series with San Francisco. The Giants are straight up reeling, having blown an eight-game division lead. Hopefully we can keep the line spooling off.

To the links.

Chris Davis Has Been Tough to Watch, but I’m Still Riding with Crush

Chris Stoner of Baltimore Sports and Life is talking himself into solidarity with his fellow Chris, Davis. Hey, Davis had four hits and just one strikeout over the final two games in Oakland. Hopefully, he’s breaking out of it.

No, Mark Trumbo is Not a First Half Hitter

Speaking of the O’s struggling sluggers, Mark Trumbo finally busted out yesterday as well, with a grand slam and five RBI. Trumbo has a reputation as a “first half” guy, and he’s been living up to that rep here in July and August so far. However, Jon Shepherd of Camden Depot felt the need to put that narrative to bed. Here’s to Mark doing the same.

Zach Britton’s 2016: An All-Time Great Season?

Zach made us sweat a bit yesterday, bringing the potential winning run to the plate in a bases-loaded two-outs situation in the ninth. He induced a groundout from noted lefty-masher Danny Valencia though, because he’s Zach Britton and he’s amazing. Corinne Landry of FanGraphs dives into just how historically awesome. (He set an MLB record for consecutive scoreless appearances yesterday, btw.)

O’s Have Plenty of Options for September Call-Ups

With just a few short weeks until the rosters expand, Camden Depot’s Chris Booze looks into the likely candidates in the O’s minors. With no prospects ready to break in, what the Birds do have is a group of puzzle pieces who could certainly impact the team down the stretch. Some of them aren’t on the 40-man roster though, as Booze points out, so some more shuffling may be in order.

History Shows August is a Do-or-Die Month for O’s

It’s Friday, and that means it’s time for history professor Matt Taylor’s weekly lesson over at MASN. He points out that, in recent playoff seasons 2012 and 2014, the Birds were on fire in August, while when they’ve missed the dance, it was in large part due to cooling off in the year’s eighth month. Matt says that the Birds’ scorching June MIGHT save them, should another August Swoon occur, but we all hope that it won’t come to that. Let’s light up August from here on out, O’s.

And in Ravens news…

The Good, Bad, Ugly, & the Megan Fox: Ravens Tame Panthers

Since we’re talking about August Swoons and September call-ups, that means football is in the air as well. The Ravens played their first preseason game of 2016 last night and it went pretty, pretty, pretty good, all things considered. Tony Lombardi gives the highs and lows in this year’s first Good, Bad, Ugly, and Megan Fox.
