Every couple of weeks I like to check in to see how the top minor leaguers in the organization are faring, so I figured I would update those who do not follow the farm system closely. This is based off the top 10 prospect rankings according to Baseball America that was released in the offseason and then a couple of notables.

  1. Dylan Bundy – It has almost been a year since the top prospect underwent Tommy John Surgery and he is finally seeing “real” game action. In his first start for the Aberdeen Ironbirds last Sunday, Bundy allowed one run with six strikeouts and no walks in five innings. Bundy will make two more starts for the short-season affiliate, and then be re-evaluated. It is not out of the question that Bundy makes an impact for the Orioles later this summer (more than likely out of the bullpen).

  1. Kevin Gausman – Gausman looks to have settled in after rejoining the rotation on June 7th. The right-hander has gone 3-0 and has allowed just two earned runs and 14 hits in 19 innings during that span, striking out 14 and walking five. The future is now and Gausman could be the boost the team needs moving forward.

  1. Eduardo Rodriguez – After struggling in the spring, Rodriguez has yet to hit is stride with Double-A Bowie. The talented left-hander missed almost a month of the season after injuring his knee. Returning from the disabled list, it looked like Rodriguez found his groove giving up a combined two earned runs in his first two starts. However, in his last four starts, Rodriguez has given up 6, 2, 5, and 2 earned runs respectively. For the season, Rodriguez is 2-4 with an ERA of 5.55.

  1. Hunter Harvey – The 2013 first round draft pick started the 2014 campaign strong, but has hit a rough spot the last couple of starts. In his last two starts Hunter allowed 11 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. To put that in perspective, in Hunter’s first 8 starts, he only allowed 8 earned runs total. Hunter started for the North in the South Atlantic League All-Star game on Tuesday night and pitched one scoreless inning, giving up a hit and walking one.

  1. Jonathan Schoop – Schoop has been with the big league team for the entire 2014 season and has batted .221 with 5 home runs. Schoop has shown flashes offensively and defensively at times, but the team needs more from the young second baseman and I wonder how much longer Buck Showalter can allow Schoop to struggle at the big league level.

  1. Tim Berry – Berry is coming off one of his better starts of the season on June 15th as he threw 6 innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out seven. The left-hander did walk four in that ballgame. Overall, Berry has gone 4-3 with a 3.94 ERA and has struck out 64 hitters in 75 1/3 innings pitched for the Bowie Baysox. The fact the organization promoted him to the big league club (even for a day), shows how much they think of the 23-year-old.

  1. Henry Urrutia – The Cuban outfielder never hit his stride before undergoing hernia surgery in May. Urritia probably won’t see game action until late July at the earliest and this can probably be chalked up as a lost season. With his base running and outfield defense questionable at best, I wonder what future he has with the organization.

  1. Mike Wright – I figured I would look up Wright’s stats and see that he has continued his progression in the organization. I was wrong! The right-hander has an ERA of 6.79 and is 1-6 on the season. Wright has a streak of seven straight starts of giving up 4+ runs. Wright is too talented to be struggling this bad, so I wonder what is going on with the 24-year-old.

  1. Michael Ohlman – Trying to build off a solid 2013 season, the young catcher has had trouble adjusting to Double-A pitching. Ohlman is batting .244 with only two home runs and 18 RBIs. In 57 games and 201 at-bats, Ohlman has already struck out 49 times.

  1. Chance Sisco – The Orioles 2nd round draft pick in 2013 has had a solid season for Single-A Delmarva. The potential catcher of the future has batted .310 with 3 homeruns, 23 RBIs with an OPS of .816. Sisco is only 19 years old and is in low A, but he is definitely a player to monitor.

NOTABLES:

Christian Walker – The young first baseman continues to mash for Double-A Bowie. Walker is currently batting .305 with 17 HR, 61 RBIs, and an OPS of .904. Walker also has an OBP of .369. This is how a prospect should perform! I am not sure if/when Walker will be promoted to Triple-A, but if you want to follow any minor leaguer for the rest of the year, Walker should be on top of that list.

Dariel Alvarez – Alvarez has flat out raked since signing with the Orioles last July. The Cuban outfielder has continued that this year with Double-A Bowie. Alvarez is batting .322 with 12 HR, 55 RBIs, .340 OBP, .529 slugging percentage, and an OPS of .869. I would imagine the 25-year-old will be promoted at some point to Norfolk. With left field and right field a question mark in 2015 for the Orioles, Alvarez is another guy to monitor this year.

Nolan Reimold – I had to do it! I have always been a fan of Reimold, and I will continue to go down with the ship. However, I am glad Reimold is able to play the game he loves again. I don’t know if he will remain healthy, or if he will ever wear an Orioles uniform again, but Reimold has been playing with Bowie recently. In 22 at-bats, Reimold is batting .273, with 2 RBIs. Here is to Reimold being able to stay healthy…for once.
