With his two mammoth homeruns in a 11-3 win over the Yankees on Saturday, and his third in two days in another win on Sunday, first baseman Chris Davis now has 31 home runs before the All-Star break. I think its safe to assume Davis will surpass his career high of 33, reached last season.

Davis even tried to do Oriole fans a favor and take out Pedro Strop with his home run that found its way into the bullpen.

The question now is, how many home runs will Crush hit?

Davis has a legit chance of reaching 60 home runs, something that has only been done eight times, and not since Barry Bonds hit 73 back in 2001.

31 home runs with 79 games left puts him on a pace for about 60 dingers this year.

If Davis stays on pace and hits 60, it would be the highest total home runs in the MLB in the “non-steroid era” since Phillies slugger Ryan Howard hit 58 in 2006.

Not only would hitting this many home runs be historic, it may also end a historic run.

Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera is looking to become the first player in MLB History with back-to-back triple crowns. Davis may have something to say about that; even though he is second to the Detroit slugger in average and RBI, he leads Cabrera by seven home runs.

Davis started the season off as hot as he ended last year, when he homered in his last five (regular season) games of the 2012 season. Davis wasted no time in 2013. With home runs in four straight games to start the season, he had homered in nine straight games dating back to last year. Many people had thought he would cool down at some point.

Spoiler alert: he hasn’t.

Hitting .333 on the year, Davis said after Saturdays’ game that he isn’t looking to hit home runs.

“I’m not going up there to try and hit home runs.” Davis said. “I’m just trying to put good swings on good pitches. I think that’s the biggest thing.”

The home runs that Davis hits have brought the fans to their feet, and sparked something more rare, a Buck Showalter smile. That’s something you don’t see everyday.

So unless he suddenly forgets how to swing a bat during the second half of the year, I think you can pencil Chris Davis in for anywhere from 50-54 home runs in 2013.
