For the third time on this home stand the Baltimore Orioles took a lead into the ninth inning, and for the third straight time, the Orioles go home with a loss. That’s six in a row overall and seven straight losses at home.

These are not good times for the hometown nine.

Tonight was another brutal kick in the groin loss. The O’s took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning. Freddy Garcia actually outpitched Yankees starter CC Sabathia but the bullpen that was so good last year let them down again.

I have no problem with manager Buck Showalter going back to his closer Jim Johnson tonight. He had blown two straight saves but for this team to be successful in my opinion, they need Johnson to be the guy he was last season. Unfortunately he gave up a one out solo home run to Travis Hafner and the game was tied.

Pedro Strop gave up two in the tenth and the Birds lose 6-4.

To recap, Jim Johnson has blown three saves in a row. The Orioles have lost two straight games in which they held the lead after seven innings. Did I mention they also lost in extra innings tonight?

It’s not 2012 anymore.

I hope that come August we can look back on this stretch of games and laugh, but I’m worried and getting more worried with every loss.

Unless you’re delusional, you should be a little concerned too.

  1. Outside of starting pitching, my concern is the mental state of JJ. To me, he has gotten away from his approach of throwing the ball and letting the fielders deal with the outcome. He depended on his sinker to induce the ground ball but now, to me, he’s trying to paint with a fine brush to get the K. Specific to this evening’s game vs. the Yanks, the change up wasn’t even close (which he uses against the left-handed batters).

Granted this evening I thought that the Umpiring was giving calls to the Yanks on close pitches and that forced JJ to throw a fat pitch strike. Look how that worked out for us.

IMO, he’s trying to throw the perfect pitch and that is where he is getting into trouble. Mind you, I don’t play professional ball so what the hell do I know.
